Retreat Rosenwald School Mission Statement: The Retreat Colored Rosenwald School was preserved to ensure that visitors would be able to experience the integrity and authenticity of what the education environment was like for African-American students during the early 1920’s to the 1940’s. The school also serves as a teaching tool for school groups and others traveling through the area to learn about African American Heritage. Visitors, along with elementary, middle, and high school students will be able to view period appropriate artifacts and participate in interactive classroom demonstrations. Student groups will be guided by teachers using state curriculum guidelines, targeting third, eighth and eleventh grade students since they are required to study local and US history. Built in 1923 this important building was opened for the start of the 1924 school year and is a part of the Westminster community rich past. This is one of the few Rosenwald schools left in the state of South Carolina and is a designated site on the South Carolina Heritage Corridor.
